SHORT STORIES

The Angry Gods

SYNOPSIS: Two brothers are caught in the maelstorm of social changes beyond their control.

Cycle of the Sun

SYNOPSIS: A  friar who teaches in a pontifical university run by his conservative religious order develops a liking to an activist female teacher,  jeopardizing his priestly calling.

Death of a Boy Soprano

SYNOPSIS: A pious diocesan seminarian loses his innocence in the seminary from one of the formators, abandons his goal to become a priest, ends up as a male prostitute for a living and discovers his impotence to relate to a woman of his love even as he finds it futile to lead a normal life.

Doors, Doors, Doors

SYNOPSIS: That "many are called but few are chosen" applies to the selection process of those aspiring for the religious life.  When their fellow aspirants are either asked to leave or leave by their own accord, those left behind feel the initial aftershock as they try to move on.

In Search of the Prodigal

SYNOPSIS: A young priest whose vocation to the priesthood runs counter to what his family expects him to be in life confronts the checkered history of his clan and wonders whether his vocation is a rebellion cloaked by piety, abnegation and disdain for what this whole imperfect world represents.

Los Angeles Pasados

SYNOPSIS: The title is in Spanish, but this is the English version of the Tagalog Mga Anghel ng Lumipas. At the height of student activism, a seminarian who leads a cloistered lifestyle is drawn into the protest movement and in the process gets completely immersed in the struggle of the homeless and illegal squatters with fatal consequence.

Mga Anghel ng Lumipas

SYNOPSIS: Tagalog version of the English Los Angeles Pasados.

Our Hidden Galaxette

SYNOPSIS: This University of Santo Tomas award winner in one of its annual Rector's Literary contests, English division, short story category, is written in the form of a diary, chronicling the main character's day-to-day difficulties when assigned by the Father Master of a religious monastery to look after a newly-admitted aspirant who apparently lacks the vocation to the religious life.

Pentecost of Green

SYNOPSIS: A newly ordained religious priest finds out to his dismay that to live with the saints in heaven is a great glory but to live and work with them on earth is another story, especially when they happen to be imperfect religious priests like himself living in this equally imperfect world.
