NEW YORK: Fr. Gilbert Luis R. Centina III, OSA has been included in the fifth volume of Tesauro Agustiniano, a multivolume compendium of Augustinians achievers in various fields throughout the history of the religious Order. The inclusion of Father Gilbert, who died on May 1, 2020 due to complications from Covid-19, speaks to his importance as a notable poet and author in and out of the Augustinian universe.
Compiled and written by Rafael Lazcano, a respected Spanish author, editor and academic, the encyclopedia (Uni Cervantes Fundación Universitaria: Madrid, 2020) contains biographical and bibliographical entries of the most illustrious figures of the Order of Saint Augustine since its founding in 1244 and of the Order of Augustinian Recollects since its start in 1588. It also includes members of the women branches of the Augustinian Order.
The encyclopedia of Lazcano is described as a "cyclopean work, in which it has been possible to unite brevity, density of content and data," encompassing a wide array of human endeavors: cultural, literary, social, scientific, missionary and hagiographic identity of the Augustinian family in Spain, Portugal, Latin America and the Philippines. This "Augustinian monument of erudition," according to Spanish author Fr. Ángel Martínez Cuesta, OAR, is characterized by "conciseness, density, clarity of presentation, rich information and methodological rigor.”
According to Roberto Blanco Andrés of the Spanish National Research Council, Lazcano has carefully taken care of the precision of the biographies. "Where before it was easy to find partiality, hagiographic or uncritical fiber, we found conciseness and rigor outlined with pressure, agility and detail. This involves filing, polishing or directly eliminating errata, errors or possible ambiguities transmitted - sometimes without judgment - from previous compilers or scholars of the Order of Saint Augustine, reiterated without question or criticism over time … the encyclopedia...is destined to be a classic."
